Protesta de Baraguá

The Baraguá Protest is the name given to the order of disobedience issued by Cuban General Antonio Maceo on March 15, 1878, in connection with the Zanjón Pact, which set a precedent for Cuba's independence from Spain.
The Baraguá Protest is considered an important symbol of Cuban fighting spirit, as it demonstrated that the leaders, officers, and soldiers were prepared to continue the struggle until independence was achieved, despite the hardships of war.

This day is still celebrated in the small town of 6,000 inhabitants and is considered a public holiday, attracting high-ranking politicians from Havana.
In 2023, the monument and its surroundings underwent extensive renovations, as Dias Canel had registered to attend the festivities.

The inhabitants of Pueblos Mangos de Baraqua would probably not be Cubans if they didn't start celebrating as early as the 13th of the month.
